FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE (Wednesday, October 27, 2010)

CQWW DX Contest Expands Recognition for Assisted Categories

(Hicksville, NY October 27, 2010) –The SSB weekend of the CQ World
Wide DX Contest is this coming weekend, and CQWW Contest Director Bob Cox,
K3EST, is highlighting the expanded and strengthened award program for the
Assisted categories, as of this year’s running of the CQWW Contest. This
applies to both the SSB and CW weekends.

“The CQ WW Contest Committee would like to inform you,” says Cox, “that the
ASSISTED CATEGORY award program has been greatly expanded.” Specific changes
include the following:

– All Low Power and QRP assisted entrants will be specifically listed and
eligible for awards as is already the case for unassisted entries.
– A band-by-band breakdown for all band assisted World, Europe and USA will
be provided within the 2010 results.
– Lastly, the number of plaques available to assisted entrants will be
increased to include Europe Assisted All Band and all World Assisted Single
Bands.

“We hope that this action provides an incentive for entrants using a QSO
spotting system to join the assisted category,” Cox explains.

K3EST also reminds CQWW participants that the log submission deadlines have
been changed. SSB logs must be submitted by Nov. 21, 2010 and CW logs by
Dec. 21, 2010.

NYQP NA2M SOLP Mixed

Contest Scores No Comments

My tale of woe… I lost all 150 40M QSOs when I tried to use N1MM to send
a CW exchange. I received a message that a file was missing, e.g. DLPORTIO.dll.
It was not missing, but the computer locked up and after an hour trying to fix it
I gave up and had to reinstall N1MM. I had saved previous contest logs to a thumb drive
including the JARTS RTTY contest which I was also operating in. After this experience I
backed up my JARTS log every time I changed bands. Below is my report just before the NYQP
ended.

Operated some 6 and a half hours with a number of computer hang ups and slow CW response.

As Mike noted there were a lot of Owls to work. That was great! Operated low power using telnet (rules say nothing/nada about assisted) and was posting many stations

As Tom mentioned I operated no RTTY as the JARTS contest was on and the exchange there is age and not state. Same problem as last year. I do not imagine that there were many RTTY QSO’s in the 2010 NYQP

NYQP KS2G SOLP SSB

Hoots!

Was able to operate only 5 hours.

Had to QRT at 17:00 Local to head for Big Apple for dinner and chamber music concert at 92nd Street Y. (Excellent performance by Takacs Quartet!)

So missed out on the opportunity to work 75 meters — which was my biggest band last year (139 Q’s).

Still did better this year in five hours than last year in six:

Band QSOs Pts Sec Mul
7 177 177 65 1
14 88 88 22 0
Total 265 265 87 1

Score : 23,320 (vs. 13,845 last year)

99.9% running.

Didn’t hear many stations calling CQ-NYQP (but lots of JOTA stations).

But based on my runs, seemed like there was much more activity this year than last.

Last year’s score was good for #2 statewide SOLP-SSB.
Don’t think that will be the case this time.

Worked lots of Owls: N2FF (twice), N2YBB, NA2M, KA2D, W2LK.
Still looking for K2LE on SSB. 🙂

Worked 45 of 62 counties — including four out of five in NYC. (Bronx, where were you?)

Also, lots of former New Yorkers and specifically Long Islanders — including WB8RAE who got that call in WVA, is now resident in Florida, but grew up in my old neighborhood in Laurelton. Small world.

Great fun.

On to CQWW!!

80 meters: S 8 line noise here – NUTS
No antennas – still had a good time

Worked the contest for 10 1/2 hours SOLP Mixed. I don’t think I ever worked so many Owls in one contest: KS2G, N2FF, NA2M, W2LK, K2LE, KA2D, K2LE.

Here is the summary:

Band Mode QSOs Pts Sec Mul
1.8 CW 1 2 0 0
1.8 LSB 2 2 0 0
3.5 CW 23 46 1 0
3.5 LSB 110 110 2 0
7 CW 23 46 4 0
7 LSB 173 173 66 1
14 USB 3 3 3 0
Tottal Both 335 382 76 1

Score : 29,414

I think I may have won Brooklyn again 🙂
